At the Magdalen Church of England / Methodist School, we believe that, by teaching RSHE within a Christian context, we will enable our children to become healthy, safe, respectful and responsible members of society.
The guiding principles that drive us while teaching this compulsory subject, is that the content being taught is age appropriate and developmentally appropriate. We ensure that R.S.H.E is taught sensitively and inclusively, and respect the varied backgrounds of our families and their beliefs, always with the aim of providing pupils with the knowledge they need to guide them in this ever changing world.
We also teach children about their mental health and their mental wellbeing. This aspect is central to the areas covered in this subject. We know that children and young people are increasingly experiencing challenges, and that young people are at particular risk of feeling lonely. New subject content will give them the knowledge and capability to take care of themselves and receive support if problems arise.
Our school uses the Jigsaw PSHE scheme which supports the teaching of Relationships and Health Education.
The Jigsaw scheme is matched against the ‘Goodness & Mercy’ resource which supports the delivery of RSHE in Church Schools. We ensure that our Ten Magdalen Values run through RSHE curriculum.
We value the support of parents within our curriculum and so welcome parents’ views. On the school website, you will find our draft policy, an information booklet for parents as well as a breakdown of the ‘Jigsaw’ and ‘Goodness and Mercy’ content of the RSHE curriculum at our school.
