Family Learning

Our school believes that children learn best, when they are supported by trusted adults and family members who are interested and involved in their learning. Our aim is to involve all parents and carers in their child’s education whether this is through face to face contact, curriculum workshops, homework tasks, or Pop-In sessions.

For over 20 years, our school has worked in partnership with Lincolnshire Lifelong Learning, to provide Family Learning programmes for our school community. Such programmes are designed to enhance parents’ skills in Literacy, as well as to familiarise them with the teaching methods used within school so that they are better informed as to how to best support their child at home. All parents and children in Year 1 are invited to join our Family English course which runs weekly for 10 weeks throughout the autumn and spring terms. The Family English course covers topics such as speaking & listening, handwriting, phonics and writing for different purposes. Adults work with a tutor from the LCC team before joining their child in a bespoke lesson in which they are able to support their child. Lessons are themed to make them fun and practical, as well as providing the adults with the opportunity to extend their child’s learning. These courses have proved to be very popular over the years. Feedback from parents suggests that they find the sessions fun and informative.

For the past 10 years we have also offered Family Learning programmes for parents of children in the reception class. These sessions take place in the summer term and demonstrate how learning through play and practical experience is a powerful way of helping children to learn; preparing them for Key Stage 1. Programmes that have taken place for the reception children have included Recycle, Refashion, Re-Use during which children and parents learn how to use ‘junk materials’ to support learning. We have also enjoyed ‘Family Fun with Food’ during which children and adults learn about healthy eating and growing their own vegetables. The current programme for reception children and their parents is ‘Family Fun Outdoors’ in which we demonstrate the value of learning outdoors by making dens, mud pies and going for walks etc. Be Happy, Be healthy is the programme for Summer 2024.
